Who can forget the fistful of cracking adverts which Levis pumped out in the 1990s? Flat Eric, Underwater Love, the Biker riding out of the lift to ‘The Joker’ and a rakish Brad Pitt in a dusty jail break, defining a denim clad generation.
The humble denim shirt, once the preserve of cowboys, has made its way onto the wardrobe staples list. It was first clocked last year when Alexa Chung took up residence on the front row (frow) at London Fashion Week. As per usual, once the high street gets a whiff of a trend it does it to death. Remember, the simpler the better: no glitter, no studs and certainly no cut away sections. This shirt wants to have the louche appearance that it has been hanging in your wardrobe for decades and you just happened to pull it out. If you find the right one, in a few years, that’s exactly what will happen and you’ll be all the more grateful for it.
If denim is too starchy and unwieldy for you then try a chambray shirt – softer, easier to manipulate and works better over curves than stiff denim. Beware of the pockets whatever your bust size: sometimes they sit weirdly high on the curve of the bust rising up to the clavicle. And never use the pockets to store anything in – this will ruin the line of your outfit.
But what can you wear this most humble of shirt with, we hear you cry? This month try wearing your denim shirt with the khaki pants, loafers and a boat load of jewellery. Then team with 7/8 trousers, an oversized clutch and a mid-heeled court, or wear with your favourite summer skirt and bust out a block heeled sandal.
