This is a lovely easy recipe to make with the children, not only will they enjoy making them, they’ll love tucking into them too!
Easy cheesy breadsticks
Makes between 20-25 depending on size
Ingredients
250g white bread flour
7g sachet easy bake yeast
Good pinch of salt
1 tablespoon olive oil
150ml warm water
Ground black pepper
75g Strong cheddar – grated
25g Parmesan – grated plus extra for sprinkling over before cooking.
Oven 200c
Method
Mix the flour, yeast and salt together in a large bowl. Add the olive oil and gradually add the water, bringing together the mixture to form a dough.
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until you have a smooth dough, it should be spongy and bounce back when pressed. The children will love getting involved with this bit!
Place the dough back in your bowl, cover and leave for an hour to double in size.
While the dough is proving line two flat baking trays with grease proof paper and heat the oven to 200c.
Once proved you need to ‘knock back’ the dough by adding the cheese, a good grind of black pepper and kneading for a further 2 mins until the cheese and pepper are combined.
For ease halve the dough mixture and roll one half on a lightly floured surface to about 7mm thick. Cut the dough into 1cm thick strips and place on the lined baking trays, leaving an approx 1-2cm gap between them. Sprinkle each stick with some finely grated parmesan cheese and bake in the over for approx 12-15minutes depending on size, turn the tray half way through for an even bake. Repeat with the second half. They should be a lovely golden brown colour and snap when broken in two.
These will keep fresh in an airtight container for about a week, that’s if they last that long!
They are lovely eaten on their own or for dipping in hummus!
