English sparkling wine

As football fever grips the nation (or some of it!) we thought we’d continue the theme and put the spotlight on all things English in the wine world!

Earlier this month Wetherspoons announced it was dropping champagne in favour of English sparkling wine and in industry blind tastings, English sparkling wine regularly holds its own against champagne.

Five facts about English sparkling wine.

We’ve been making sparkling wine in England since the 1600s.

The first bottle able to cope with the pressure in sparkling wine was made in the UK, not France!

The ‘terroir’ (natural environment in which a particular wine is produced, including factors such as the soil and climate) in the south of England is very similar to the chalky soil in the Champagne region.

There are around 5,000 acres of vineyards in the UK that’s equivalent to around 3,800 football pitches.

There are now over 400 vineyards in the UK – so there’s plenty of wine to try!

One of our favourites here at The Fizz Company is Bolney Blanc de Blancs, it’s made from Chardonnay grapes (one of the grapes used in champagne) and it’s made the same way too!
