Earth, Wit & Style enjoyed THE best lunch of the season so far (now there’s an accolade!) when we stopped in Helmsley on the way back from the Coast at the weekend to literally ‘grab a bite’
Heading off the main square towards Castlegate, over the beck, with Helmsley Castle ahead of you Mannion & Co occupies a corner plot on the right. As soon as we spotted it we knew our intention of ‘grabbing a bite’ was out of the window and before we knew it, we had occupied a sunny spot outside and two small glasses of the chilled house white were on order…. errrrr whoops!
We recognised the name… and the branding… and soon remembered the original Mannion & Co Kitchen on Blake Street in York. The Mannion family first opened these premises as a traditional green grocers’ over 30 years ago, and over time have restored the Tudor frontage that is visible from the back courtyard. Following the popularity of this venture, Andrew Burton has lovingly restored and renovated this former interior design shop in Helmsley in the typical ‘Mannion Style’
I am aware that eager folk queue out of the doors at the York branch, so avoid the crowds! Its worth heading up to Helmsley to simply lunch here.
We ordered a bits & bobs grazing platter and a platter (pictured) offering a colourful array of olives, pickles and tomatoes.
Accompanied by fresh bread baked on the premises, it was a taste sensation! The service was impeccable too, the whole experience an absolute pleasure. We reluctantly left with take out coffee (their own roast) with complimentary homemade biscotti and the urge to return as soon as possible!
