Mulled wine

There’s nothing that says Christmas like a glass of deliciously warm mulled wine, from its smell to the warmth of the glass in your cold hands, it simply is Christmas in a glass!

Ingredients

1 whole orange studded with 10 cloves

2 oranges sliced

400ml orange juice

100g Sugar – add extra sugar if you prefer it sweeter

1 bottle of cheap red wine

2 cinnamon sticks

2 star anise

2 pieces of mace

2 cardamom Pods (slightly crushed)

A splash of sloe gin, about 100ml (optional)

Method

Put all the ingredients apart from the sloe gin in a large pan. Cook on a low heat for about half an hour, stirring to dissolve the sugar. Remove from the heat and leave to infuse for 1-4 hours minimum.

To serve re-heat without boiling, stir in the sloe gin if using, and pour into heatproof glasses, garnish with the orange slices.
