Skirts can be a marvellous alternative to the well-worn denim or even that trusty winter dress. Here are our 3 wardrobe skirt basic styles:
Pencil
A-line
Maxi
A well-constructed pencil skirt can hold you in in all the right places and bring back a soupcon of sexiness to your style. The tighter the better with a good amount of elastane in the mix should do the trick or try a leather pencil for all out VA VA Voom. Find a style which hits just below the knee or a midi style (to mid-calf) and wear with converse (and no VPL pants) for a modern look or dress up for the evening.
An A-line skirt is universally flattering however there are some caveats when it comes to choosing your skirt: pleats and gathers. If your tummy after kids isn’t as flat as it used to be then avoid skirts with gathers/pleats at the waistline which add bulk over the tummy as well as the hips. And talking of hips, to balance a wider set hip area a skirt needs to have some volume in it. That’s why 1950’s style dress and skirts look great on Pear shaped figures. These also hit just below the knee.
A fitted maxi skirt helps with your summer wardrobe no end. Just a note on the maxi. It should ideally be a block colour in thick modal so you can wear it with lots of different tops.
How do you style your skirt? Use that Breton striped top to complete your outfit, that crew neck sweater and a necklace we talked about and that denim shirt should come in handy as well.
