We had Rachel Zoe and her ‘Zoebots’ to thank for the extra-large bag/small body trend circa 2006. All that candy hanging in the crook of your arm proved to be unwieldy and was scented with a faint whiff of WAG. 2012 saw the clutch come roaring back as the bag of choice but with limited space, this was an evening/date option only for many women.
Cross-body bags have always been there in the background: reliable, functional and value for money but more closely associated with a hands-free mum complete with pram, dog and three year old rather than a fashion ‘moment’. But roll on 2013 and cross-body bags are having their fashion day in the sun. Hurrah! Lisa Armstrong (The Daily Telegraph’s Fashion Editor) sites the cross-body bag as the one item that makes her feel psychologically prepared for NYFW.
